This app doesn't have a database for us to play with as that would take an entirely different tool to manage.

Your best bet would be to get something like WAMP (free) and install it. Or the equivalent for your OS. That installs Apache web server, mysql, php. It is a complete webhost and will allow you do develop sites and databases. The tool in there to use is phpMyAdmin to manage the database.
