What in the world is Perl?

Question

I heard one of my older friends talking about this thing called Perl. He says it's a programming language and that people hate it. But what the heck is it????!?!?????!??!!??!???!???

It is old, if you want to learn just for sake of it I am not holding you back(I think there are no job oppurtunities anymore idk but probably less than other languages.)
