1) choose the right language
recommendations : r or python
2) learn data handling and cleaning using the lang. e.g. for py learn numpy and pandas
3) learn the data algos

alternatively you can take courses
edx coursera udemy etc etc or datacamp

Martin Taylor it depends just as me when i choose someone for work, i don't see degree, i see if they have skills. i happen to form part of the 'real world'
