This question is very open and vague... But here you are some general non-strictly-formal tips:
Do a quick sketch/mockup of how you want your software to look like, start doing research about whether the ideas you based on the design can actually be implemented in java or w/e language... Or even if it's within your skill category.

Finally start coding, or more precisely; start encountering bugs and semantic errors and fix them!

I won't say go follow a software production model or the waterfall method, just get going it's a mini software.
