How viruses effect systems is determined by the payload written into the virus, aka, what the virus was made to do. Which can by anything from ruining your computer, extorting you for cash by encrypting all your files, doing nothing but spreading, spying on you, to trying to make you beat Touhou on insane difficulty. The possibilities are endless but generally are to the benefit of the one who wrote the virus. Though not always, there are even viruses in the past which we made to fix security holes so that other viruses couldn't exploit thenm.
