Publishing a website
hey guys I have just finished coding a website for a client and obviously want to get it live and finished but I have literally no idea how you do this. I don't want to host it myself as the client has said they can maintain it once it's live so how do I go about getting the website up. any pointers in the right direction will be great

If you're not hosting the website for them, then give them the files so they can upload it to their own server. If they're wanting YOU to upload it and make sure it's running fine on their server, then you'll need the information (at least FTP) to their server so you can upload it.
Let me know a bit more about the situation. More than happy to help.

hey there.
thanks for your response I appreciate it. my thinking is , and forgive me if this is totally wrong but. Now that the site is done I was gonna give it to him to go to say Wix or another hosting site and just upload the site to them. does this sound about right ?

Yeah, they'll need to have some means of hosting the website if you don't provide hosting services. Whether it's a free host, something like WIX, or their own web server. If you're allowed to tell me, is this client a business or someone that wants a personal site? If it's a business, then ideally they'll want their own server / domain name to match, if they don't already have those things. If it's personally website, the other options would be more plausible.
I'd speak with the client to find out exactly what they're expecting and wanting in that regard. Advise them on the possible solutions and what may work out best for them, since they may not know. If you're simply needing to transfer the files to them, then I'd compress (zip/rar) the folder that contains the website and either email it to them, upload it directly to them, or use some sort of system like DropBox to be able to securely get the files to them. These are all professional means of getting the files to them, unless the client specifically tells you what they're wanting/expecting.

this is a personal site so I was just going to help them find a decent host that's affordable and help them get it published then my work is done.

@Matt Barton
Gotcha. I have to leave work, but I can send you some links to affordable hosting that I've used in the past.
Also, if you go to www.GoDaddy.com, they can register a domain name that's just $1 for an entire year. Really good deal.
