I'm with Duncan on this and it's also how I was taught back in the late 80s/90s. Look at your keyboard, F and J have a little ridge on the keys so you can easily get back to your home keys; your index fingers go on the ridged keys (F/J). When you're learning how to type, DON'T look at the keys or your fingers when you're doing it. It's hard at first, but if you keep doing that, you won't reach your typing potential. Properly learn it how it's being taught and just push through the difficulty of it at first; it'll pay off. If you need to, do something to cover up the letters on your keyboard (tape/paint/whatever) so you aren't tempted and if you are you won't get results from it. To put it into perspective, when I use to stare at my fingers while typing, I could get maybe 40-60 WPM. When I decided to stop "cheating" and learn it properly, my WPM jumped from that range to 100-120 WPM (average for me is about 110 on a normal day, 100 when it's cold, and 120 when I'm jacked up on coffee lol) Also, this helps your accuracy and ability to fix mistakes almost immediately. After learning it properly, my accuracy has always been 99%+

Ton of benefits if you learn the keyboard finger mapping, I learned it with a typing tutor application on my brothers advice( highly suggested) Benefits # i think neck pain should reduce coz we dont look up and down # my favorate is no need of distracting keyboard lights and being able to type in dark as well # typing speed will increase a lot in some time, it ll be very hard in the start, specially it ll come in your way if you are doing think-heavy task. It was tough for me in the start to find the f & j key, with which you position your index finger so i dropped small drop of glue which hardened and now i easily find f&j. Word of caution, for programmers the pinky finger has to cover a lot of keys and specially when accessing ctrl, alt, shift shortcuts. So therefore the natural progression of lessons in typing tutor applications help a lot, coz they also show you which fingers should be used best.

Hello there! Practice makes one perfect, so you need to practice typing, that's the best way to increase your speed. You may also enroll in websites like Ratatype, which train you on faster typing. Good luck!

I can highly recommend to learn how to touch type. l learned about 25yrs ago at school and it was probably one of the most useful things I learnt. The basics are you have what are known as 'home keys' after every stroke, your finger comes 'home'. Your muscle memory quickly learns where the keys are and you'll no longer have to look at the keyboard.

For me, I started with "Marvis Beacon" and then moved on to "Typing Master". My secret to typing fast was that, i made it a routine, everyday i type for at least 1 -2 hours daily. Just know that "The more you type the faster you become". As for not looking at the keyboard, it's quite difficult at first, but you get a hang of it as you progress. I think what you need is consistency, when you see typing as fun, you'll learn faster. I hope it works for you.

I started doing typing tests when I was 12, I am now 34. Then I progressed to typing without looking at the keyboard. I had gotten so fast that by the age of 15 I out typed my Typing Instructor at school. I am not sure how many WPM I can still type. Start by learning the home row keys. It may be difficult at first but, you'll become a better typist

The best way to learn to reach 100wpm is to learn how to use the keyboard without looking at it. As you practice your typing speed will increase by 1wpm every 2 hours 40 minutes
