How much time do I need to be a programmer?

I'm a 4th year medical student. recently, I discovered that I have passion in programming but I'm afraid to continue learning it because I think it needs a lot of time to be a good programmer and I can't make programming affect my medical study in a bad way.

Become programmer takes all your life... New languages... language updates... New hardware, New methodologies, etc

If you become a programmer, you need to study the rest of your life :)
