What's the difference between ruby vs ruby on rails, ruby vs php, and ruby vs python ?

Question

I'm comfortable with php. I'm now learning python & ruby. I'm trying to understand how ruby compares to php and python. Are they all server side like php ? What can ruby and python be used for ?

I'm interested in Ruby, as well as i'm interested in Python, and that's why i'm trying to understand it better. Feels like Python is more science / industry oriented, and Ruby is more web / entertainment oriented (mobile apps, websites), am I right ?
