Using others code?

Hey I’m a little new to coding. I’m just wondering what are the rules for using code you see online. There are some classes and methods I see on this site that I would like to implement on my own projects but I don’t know what the rules are. Are some maybe classified as open source? And what is general rule of thumb when you see code online you want to use.

Many of the people would probably even be proud - as long as you ask nicely and credit them in your code.

You can freely use other's code IF their owners allow it, and add them to your software...
