How can programming help in times of famine or starvation?

Is it possible for IT and programming to be an answer to famine and crisis world over. What are your thoughts?

I think this is an interesting question. Technology and Programming are very beneficial in many ways for example during times of crisis social media has been used to communicate and help rescuers and resources find their way to those in need. Technology can be used to assist in famine by providing information about resources available such as charitable organizations giving away food and supplies. It can also help to prevent some disasters from occuring like providing weather information so farmers know when and how to protect their crops when possible as well as education about techniques such as water conservation/redirection and alternative methods. I can literally think of dozens of ways technology is useful and beneficial to human kind as a whole but I will not Spam your post with all of them.
