Are R and Scala in use today?

Which of you use them for medium/large projects?

Definitely. R is mostly used for data science projects, statistical and scientific analysis and such. Scala is widely used to manage parallel computations in Apache Spark.
Fortunately, Spark API is available for R, Python and Java, too :)

Yes are used both. R for statistics and scala is very famous last years bcz it supports functional programming. I am warning all of you, if you are used with oop and try scala you will suffer due to its immutability.
