It has been happening for the last ten years, and it could well take another ten years for web applications to "win". The tools, languages, APIs, protocols and browsers are going to have to improve even more

The next BIG thing will most likely be quantum computers and the need to switch your programming paradigms a bit for this particular branch of numerical computations :)

Other than that -- the real IoT omnipresence will most likely disrupt the scope of programmers' work as the meaning of being "connected" is going to be redefined, already with not only computers being programmed.
