do we still use servlets

Question

I have been trying to connect my front end to server (java) my search keeps bringing me back to jsp n servlets. but I have heard n seen same articles say that servlets are absolute. if this is true than what technology can I use.
I ultimately want to develop the front end on its own and connect it to server side through ajax.. pls sameone help steer me in the right direction pls
any tutorial will be appreciated.
