me and my wife are both applying ourselves to learn software programming, what are some tips or guides to help us become successful? were currently studying html5, css, and javascript. on my pc we use eclipse and tomcat

A Bachelor or Master degree in computer science or software engineering is quite handy. You could try it with Oracle Java developer certification, but then you should focus on software developer positions. There's a difference between a software developer and an engineer. And definitely get a Linkedin account which you use to showoff your achievements in learning, Linkedin is great for getting jobs.

Yes it is, but you need to get some professional certification. If you want to become a web developer, you can get away without certification but you will need to build a portfolio of webapps and pages you've created and share them on Linkedin. And focus on things like ReactJS, AngularJS, Model View Controller, Agile and Scrum.
