Question about number of notifications

Question

Sometimes I have 10 notifications of messages in the App for example. I check each message by clicking on it upon which the the number of outstanding notifications becomes zero (there is no number alert shown inside the red circle). Then while I am doing something in the App, two more messages come in for example. The number of outstanding notifications in the App now show up as 12 and not 2! Where is the bug here? Is the fact that I read/acknowledged the 10 previous messages not communicated to the server quickly enough?
