How does the challenge xp system work?

Question

I thought it was based on player level, but today I lost a large amount of xp to a player that was 5 levels higher than me, whereas sometimes I will lose 1 or 2 xp to players who are 5 levels below me. Do challenges have their own xp system that influences your level, or is there something else I'm not getting?

It is based on the xp each player has in the language you fight in.

So your opponent might have a higher level, but their xp in tjis language may be lower than yours.
