Is freelancing still viable?

Question

I've been doing front end development using meteor and some angular(novice angular user) for about 6 months (Also bouncing back and forth between Python/Django (novice level) and .net. Would it be viable to go freelance and build some experience before I try to get my foot in the door? Anyone else have any experiences to share? What specific areas should I focus on while I venture into the freelance domain?
