Learning PHP

Question

I just recently started learning PHP, with no knowledge of any programming language (I am a beginner actually), I find it interesting and challenging. But my question is what is the most effective way to learn programming in general??

PHP has unique docs for newcomers (php.net/docs/). Since this language is very suitable with OOP, maybe you should get some knowledge about programming paradigms at first and then follow the docs with practice of course.
