look up different distros, and pick your favorite. there's a lot of flavors out there. being as its free is cool, but remember that it isn't always as smooth as windows or mac os. common programs might not run smoothly or at all on it. some linux programs are unique in its store, but others are seriously lacking.

your welcome. if you have any more questions, let me know in this thread. i don't run linux now, but i used to for a few years. another peice of advice: avoid using linux with a build-it-yourself PC that has not-so-new parts. thats when i ran into trouble.

Go for ubuntu as you'll find it has the most info available: and you'll need it for your initial setup. Once you are familiar with installation, building from source, bash scripting ecc... you'll also know if you want to switch to another distro and which one you need/want.
