Python does bot count here

Hello, why Python does not count in this Code?:

x = """Hallo Herr Bacht
ohne space
ein space
zwei space
Drei space
vier space
Tab
zwei Tab"""
x.count ("e")
print (x)

you are suppose to give a variable and make it so

n = x.count("e")
print(n)
