How is MySQL used in a website?

I have heard about the MySQL. I installed it recently. I had apache and php already installed. Now my question is: What am I supposed to do with it? Can anybody please show some demo about how it's used. I understand that it is used to store data for example usernames and passwords. But exactly how?
