What other tag can the footer of a webpage be place?

Normally the footer of a webpage should be placed in the <footer> tag, but I got a challenge and was asked this question...so confusing

HTML5 Elements such as article, header, footer, main, aside and many more are used for semantics - to add meaning to your code. It's easier for a person to read and edit the code when you know that the element is used as a footer for example.
Its mainly a block element like div with a meaning. You can use div as another tag.

A valid question, I had almost wrong the first time. If you break the issue up into smaller pieces, then it can be easier to get the thinking behind it.

To be honest, I have never used a footer tag on anything. I find it devastating to see software companies that built (copies from GitHub or even open web-like Joomla) a website for a client to then use the footer tag for free advertising.

In a year they usually don't update the year they placed in their ads/footer, making the client look like they closed their business last year and the website designers makes us (developers) looking like fools.
