I would say learn javascript because its super useful both front end and back end . and it has grown on the list of highest paying languages but also remember each language has a unique ability from another. Hope this is helpful.

JavaScript is not a programming language it's a scripting language and also JavaScript is used in Frontend not in backend.

There are two type of languages:

1 - Client Side which is JavaScript not talking about Node JS.
2 - Server Side which is Java

Both languages have common name Java so many people get confused.

If it is for web development :-
Java is perfect for developing large web applications because of its ability to communicate with a large number of systems. You can use it with backend.

Javascript can serve both purpose frontend and backend.

In case software applications Java is the deal to go with.
