Why is it AN HTML?

Just a confusion with the English language and HTML really why is it said ‘An HTML’ and not ‘A HTML’ as to have an you have to have a vowel at the start of the word and HTML doesn’t

I think so using An before HTML except A, because 1. HTML is a not a proper word it's a short form of Hypertext Markup Language, 2. And rule says when word start with vowel sound that time An was used 3. It depends on the pronunciation of that word

Hi Liam I had the same argument with my English teacher back when the dinosaurs were dying out. The letter H is pronounced "aitch", even though it's sound is "ha" Because the correct prononciation of the letter's name starts with a vowel, we place "an" before H. But we place "a" before HAPPY because we now use the sound of the letter, which is not a vowel
