cin is pronounced "see-in". And is used for input, and uses the extraction operator (>>)

cin >> x;

cout is pronounced "see-out". Used for output, and uses the insertion operator (<<)

string x;
cout << "What is your name?: "; // Ask user their name
cin >> x; // Get user input from the keyboard
cout << "Hello: " << x; // Display the name value
