In this case, i's value can't be determined for sure without more code. The entire expression means "the third power of the value of i" or i * i * i. So if i = -1, i ** 3 = -1. If i = 3, i ** 3 = 27. And so on.

i**3 means i to the power of 3 (i x i x i). The ** operator means exponentiate or to the power of.
