What is the best way to think when creating a ui or ux ?

I want to create a web application. I want to keep its ui simple but smart what would be the best approach of doing that.
will using softwares like Photoshop or illustrator help in creating a good ui

Think like a end user. Think if u r using this application what should it look like,wht r the features u looking for.If u need any second opinion show it to a friend and ask for comments. u can refer internet to find proven/standererd mokups as well.
