For code snippets a,b,x,y are sufficient, for projects logical names with suffixes like: fp, buf, cnt. I reserve special names and prefixes, language dependant, like "tmp" or "tmpbuf" or "tmpfp" for debugging and testing. That way I know when code still has to be cleaned before commit. And I'm probably the only person who uses uppercase variable names in shell/Bash scripts, lol.
