I heartily agree, gone are the days of Linux being a tinkerers' OS, the setup is much smoother. If diving in is intimidating. At least go dual boot, and make it the default. Experience with the command line is very valuable. Just a tip, however: make a back up of any configuration files you want to edit. that way to can fall back on your previous work when you get energetic.

Bit off topic. But the best way is to use it as your main operating system. Dive on in. Head first. Well that is the best way I found for me anyway. Give yourself no other option but to learn. 😊 There is plenty of resources available. Each distro usually has online user manuals which go from basic usage through to advanced operation. Just do it!

https://youtu.be/zWWCWkcVXwQ Dive on in reference I was using. All good options presented by everyone. Mine works best for me. I guess the lesson here is. There is no 'best' way. Whatever works for you is the best way

use usb livecd to decide what distro is best for you, then install it as dual boot. learn linux command via web-based community support or read some book. once you have confidence handling basic linux command, you can install it as your main OS. Then dive down to many programming ide (python by default). use light desktop environment to fasten pc respond. after mastering advanced linux command and all feature related to programming, networking and debugging. now you can install CLI (the real linux) and have a freedom to costumize everything on your laptop.

diving in may be scary when you can't see the bottom. there are many comprehensive book to assist you learning, specially when you don't know how/where to start. "The Linux Bible" is one that I found good. If you do a littlesearch you may find the pdf downloadable for free. Of course there are many other books, but I didn't read them.
