... Ubuntu is Linux. I dont know re: Laptop. Does the school suggest minimum requirements?

I recommend minifree. Two birds in one shot. You show tangible support to the developers of LibreBIOS, and you get an FSF certified machine. Their laptops are essentially Lenovo ThinkPads refurbished with Free BIOS and other firmware. Also, since it comes with a Linux distribution preloaded, any programming setup you may need for college should be a couple of commands away.
