I dont get whats Exponentation

I get how I do it but I don't know what it is in general

exponents r nothing but multiplying the no. by itself a no. of times
like
2**2 = 4

Oh, now I get: I did know what it is but Im from Portugal and in portuguese is a number with an exponent is called "Potência" and Exponent is "Expoente" Thank you! :D I just didnt know what it is because i never heard it in english
