Lessons are great, but how do I code on my own?

What is the best way to introduce yourself to writing your own code? I have very limited experience and have completed the HTML lesson. I have previous experience editing HTML in a text box, but not much coding beyond that. Do I just keep plugging away at courses and challenges until I'm comfortable writing my own code?
