The skills in math aren't necessarily important (other than discrete math, with truth tables, if/then statements, implications, etc.). It is more the way of thinking that carries over (problem solving and logical reasoning). I taught math for 16 years (I have masters degree in math), have recently started teaching programming (no formal training, just self-taught with sololearn and playing around making programs) and am now considering leaving teaching for programming.

Absolutely not. A good programmer, and this is true for many of the the top paid in the industry, does not need to be "good" at math. In reality many software engineers are terrible at performing calculations... They rely on the computer to do computational work. That's what the computer is there for. It is a tool. A good programmer ,whether or not they excel in mathematics , will excel at understanding and applying problem-solving and logic. As Timothy Ryan noted above it's an orientation and approach to problem solving. It requires pragmatism and creativity. It certainly never hurts to improve in math or programming. The experience and perspective will be applicable in any life pursuit.
