How is determined how many xp points one will lose if lose the challenge?

Can someone explain why somethimes on some challenges, even when I lose, I won xp points and somethimes I lose more points than I would gain if I win. For example: for one recent challenge I had to gain 20xp but i lost the challenge and lost 24xp. How is that possible?

It is determined by the current XP a person has.
The higher your opponent level is and the lower your level is, the more XP you gain when winning.
You lose that much XP hen losing ranging fron 1 to 32
And for every question you get right you get 1 more XP.
And if you are a newbie, you might get anywhere from 2 to 4 XP per correct answer instead (depending on how newbie you are).
The combinations of these factors results in a total XP gain or loss of an individual.

The system compares your total xp to another player's. If he has more xp than you, then you will lose less and win more xp. If you have more xp than him, then you will lose more and win less xp

Maybe xp of players make sense, but I lost challenge from player who have two times more xp than me and I lost 24 xp. What is the issue?
