Could software c# skills translate to game dev in c# or is it a completely new set of techniques/tools?
I need some guidance on which direction to go. I love game dev much much more but feel its harder to break in...any suggestions?

Yes.
I suggest checking out Unity, you may use C# there.
You will need to learn some MonoBehaviour methods and methods in the UnityEngine library. As well as the interface/GameObject components. But that's part of the journey, right?
