What will happen if I go to challenge a player but by checking low xp I return and do not challenge?

Yes but only if he scores more.

I have clicked to challenge someone, then decided not to begin the challenge. On my Challenges page it displayed "your turn" for 24 hours, but when it disappeared, I did not lose any XP.
