with Visual Basic people mean Visual Basic 6.0 mostly. VB.Net is the continuation of Visual Basic but they changed alot and people didn't like it. What exactly is different, I don't know and there is always a big discussion on what is better, if it is vb.net or visual basic. Hope this could help you.
