I’m looking to change careers. I’ve enjoyed learning different spoken languages for communication during travel as well as for the study of ancient manuscripts and textual meaning for translation purposes. I’ve programmed machine code during past professions and remembered how much fun I had writing programs that made machines move. I’m new to the programming field, as my past skills were for specific machines and operations in the manufacturing business. What is the first language a newbie should learn?

Considering what you've done, and your confidence, I'd start with something like C++, Java, or C#. I believe you'll find a lot of use in any of those.
Best of luck to you!

Here are some links to each of the courses. Also, I always forget to mention SQL. Regardless of what you learn, make sure that you learn SQL also. Most languages have a means of connecting to a SQL database, so knowing how to properly do queries is a must if you want to utilize databases.
