When you need to bring a product to market or need to ship a certain feature out by the deadline, the great programmer will step up and get the product released whenever possible. Because they care. I can only tell you things relative to how far I've gone myself however here are some things I've found useful for growth. practice lots of it. it takes time and effort to grow. learn some theory read some other people's code. seeing how others solve problems is really useful especially if they are smarter than you. learn some about compilers I can't say it's strictly necessary but understanding how your computer understands code has been helpful. solve a problem more than once see if you can do better in a way you can measure.
