the use of cobol is handling old badly coded legacy systems by the governments and banks who don't care to change, and have no one know how it works because no one likes to code cobol, to the point where some of them are struggling to find coders to maintain their horrible undocumented systems.

well first of all it's verry difficult to comapre Mainframe language with, for example, C#. I would say COBOL is an old language but it's still necessary. So if you want to work with this kind of language than do it... You will be a verry wanted man. Learn JAVA and COBOL than you money is safe. Use of COBOL... well for a start up company there is no use for COBOL because there is JAVA but for companys, government and banks it's still important to handle big data

i'd argue it's easier and quicker to write or modify a COBOL program to do complex programmatic database joins and queries than it would be in a web language like python or c++. it might not be faster, but the learning curve is crazy easy. terrific for generating reports and quickly reshaping that data as needed. the problem is that data is in old systems that have been in use forever. it's easier and cheaper to train a cobol programmer than it is to replace your order entry and customer service system and also retrain all your existing customer service to use the new system. plus all the bugs that'd have to be stamped out, and user experience downtime, because those webpages cant answer all the users questions.
for new companies it's a different use case.
