I am a full stack senior web developer (front and back end) at my current company and have never had any training, teaching, or education in programming, all self taught. The more you write the more you learn and I find most companies now look at employing programmers based on what they can do/show in interviews and portfolios. Having degrees in programming means nothing to me when I look to hiring people. I simply give them a test, look through their portfolio code and see if they will fit it.

Started coding when I was young and created new projects to build every so often challenging myself a little more each time. Design wise (front end), that just fell into place as the projects became bigger and more complex and had to think of ways to best present UI and interactions. You can read loads of tutorials on this stuff but again, unless you do it over and over you won't get any better at it. Its Kinda like sex! Regarding the backend, I'm predominately PHP and Python and to help tie it all together with the front end use lots of JS and AJAX. I would recommend building yourself a couple of small projects, finish them all and keep them stored on GitHub or something so you can show potential employers when the time comes. Nothing worse than someone saying they can do this and that but have nothing to back up the claim! Try writing a simple blog, or admin panel. Focus on the design and UI side first and then look into hooking up to a DB using some kind of server side language. Always happy to help others out so any code you need looking at and reviewing just let me know.
