Are html and html5 the same things..?

sorry but someone keeps telling me they are.. but then someone else told me it isn't.. and they're both confusing my already nooby mind.

html gets improved and new versions with additional tags show up, which get a version number so browsers could know which version of html needs to be loaded. html5 is the most recent html version.

Html is continually updated.
Html isn't a software, but specifications to do interpreters ( softwares )... known as render engine ( as webkit ).
Specifications continuously evoluates, and browsers implements new functionnalities each at their times, at same time that they introduces new experiementals features, which could be later taken in specifications, maybe with different syntax ^^
