Html use JavaScript as programming language on client side... but Java isn't all related to client side web scripting neither to JavaScript.

Java is a semi-compiled programming language: it can be used to build 'applets' which are some apps you can embed in Html document IF user have Java Runtime Environnement ( JRE, the interpreter of the Java compiled code ) correctly installed on os and browser...
Also, it can be used to build all type of programs/apps as any other language, and so can handle server sided web services.
