Explain the name attribute in input tags

Why the name attribute is used in all input tags ?

To use those inputs in our backend.
For example -
Input fields in forms can have a name attribute, when the user submits these input field values, we as programmers can access these values in our backend(let's say php file) using the name attribute assigned in our front end(html) and use it accordingly.
