As far as I know they are used to unlock some of the code coaches during the lessons, like python.
But they are all unlocked for pro users, so maybe they wanted regular users to be able to experience these coaches with encourage.
I got 10 bits for each lesson.
And the info says you get around 300 for each project.

I don't know bits, but I know you can get XP from finishing lessons and code coaches. Number of XP depends of the number of sub-lessons in the lesson. As for code coach it does display how many XP can be gained.

It's for unlocking answers to quizzes and sometimes you need to pay bits in order to unlock the "Try for yourself" code.
