The depth of JavaScript knowledge you'll need will depend on your specific goals, as well as, needs and the complexity of your projects now and in the future. I would not suggest skimping or shortcutting gaining as much knowledge as possible ( this includes libraries and API developments ).

Remember, the best way to learn JavaScript is through practice and experimentation. Don't be afraid to try new things and make mistakes along the way.
