Why is it that when a person says something about hacking every one thinks that hes a bad person

The term "Hacker" in its original context is someone who (1) builds new things, (2) improves the existing things, (3) modifies things to let them work in other ways than the normal use and (4) break things to learn to do the three things above.

Hacking is not limited to software hacking, anyone in any field who practice above four and have below five attitudes, she or he is a hacker.

Please note that many things are misundertood because of bias. The ignorance usually gives birth to bias. The root cause may be media or anything else. I don't care about them. We must take the responsibilty to learn the truth.

because of movies, television, and news portrayal of hacking. good guy bug bounty hunters are not exciting enough for stories (mostly). and news in general only covers bad stuff to maintain ratings, so you'll only hear of evil hacks.

I remember someone asked about video game rom hacks here, and everyone mocked him for wanting to cheat at a game. little did they know, rom hacking is usually modifying the game to make something completely new like its own game. not cheating. even if it was cheating, it's single player, what's wrong with doing it to help learn code?

It doesn't necessarily bad but most of the time it was abused for their own good and thus the fight between virus creator and antivirus never ends.

Nobody is a bad person for posting an honest question, but I have seen that replies tend to be negative on hack-related questions in particular. It's probably because they haven't made an effort to create a unique thread. Instead, they often end up posting something such as "Please teach me how to hack" or "How might one create a virus". Hacking-related posts often lack 'uniqueness'. The goal on SoloLearn is to learn new things, not to constantly have to re-read duplicate posts. There would be much less criticism on hack-related threads, as well as others, if users would use the thread-search before posting an entirely new thread.

And in my opinion, most of the time the users posting threads having anything to do with questions on hacking ... it's usually because it's some kind of Hollywood-hacker movie that has encouraged them to learn for a very short time. Most people find themselves giving up after learning how much effort is required to be considered a legitimate hacker. The goal here on SoloLearn is to LEARN ... not to become whatever superhero-vigilante that they just saw on their television.

As others said, they misrepresent themselves when they post, so the better question is why would someone think that most others would think any differently when they're vague about the terminology and their intent?

Most of the people making those posts are kids, so their intent isn't that hard to figure out, and I wasn't much different in my teen years either. Considering they follow up those posts usually with requests to hack facebook, their school, etc...; it's not hard to figure out and there is nothing to pretend about with it. Call a spade a spade.

Now does media build things up? Yes, obviously. Society itself creates all sorts of things for us, and most of those things we partake in, even though we're isolating this issue. However, that doesn't mean it's all baseless, and anyone that is in cyber security understands that very clearly. We can downplay it so we're not supporting "the man," but it's a reality regardless of what we wish to think about it, not even something that's subjective. Does that mean everyone asking about hacking is like that? No. Does it mean they're not though? No.

I'm all about learning and gaining as much knowledge as I can, so I can understand that side of it completely, and have studied all of that stuff personally for fun, as well as for security purposes. Most people with that intent simply goes and learns what they need, rather than posting "How do I hack?" threads in irrelevant places.

As for the types, honestly, whether you're a script kiddie or a black hat, I'm fine with you being lumped into the same poop pile if you're doing -malicious- things to others. Terminology, just like any words, is only as useful as the amount of people that agree or understand its meaning. Ultimately, I don't much care what any of you are doing so long as it's not getting in the way of the things I'm doing. So don't steal my info or my money, and on Xmas morning don't be annoying by doing things to interfere with me playing video games. lol

It depends, many of them make a living working as security engineers and try to demonstrate the vulnerabilities of the systems and help to have safer experiences for the navigation of the users. Now, when the cyber-crime and the illicit use of knowledge are gone, the concept of crackers falls better.

Well you have to understand the history and association with it. So there are hackers and crackers hackers refer to someone who break into a system usually for testing and security reasons. as were a cracker is someone who breaks into said system for criminal reasons. Its obvious to understand why this would get mixed up mostly because the media is stupid and dont understand the difference and throw words out with no understanding. secondly there is white hat hackers and black hat hackers. white hat usually refers to people who may enter a system illegally or legally not for malicious reasons but to make it a point to show the vulnerability as to say have it fixed. Where as a black hat hacker is say for example what happened with anonymous and sony with them showing that their entire system was vulnerable but at the expense of like 40 million peoples private information. So good and bad at the same time. Where crackers are bad all around thats people just trying to steal stuff and cause chaos. Like the people who make randsomware. But on the other side crackers has an alternative meaning in the realm of engineering systems as someone who reverse engineers software or systems.

It is very easy to fall into the trap of understanding the hacking to be something of a seeking ways to harm others. This generalization is very much prevalent. So ethical hackers need to keep saying: we hack gadgets to improve safety, we hack code to find flaws... I agree with views pointing to the futility of a beginner asking on SL to be taught how to hack. There is also a misundarstanding among beginners of separating coding and hacking. If you want to hack learn how to code first. Coding and hacking complement each other.

The news only covers stories that will generate clicks and therefore money. A story about a rogue hacker group stealing information from people, companies and governments is a lot more interesting than a couple of people sitting behind a desk trying to figure out if a program can be exploited or hacked into by ill-intentioned people; the same people that the news will cover.
