i agree with nearly all answers here, there is no dilemma for coders over 50, its the same for all programmer, you can't sit 14 hours a day and write codes, you have to exercise also the body for your health, the head and the body needs action 👍😉

who sits the whole day in a chair needs some sports or exercises like yoga or pilates, that are good exercises for the whole body 👍😉

Make sure you take a break every hour. I have RSI in my wrist from neglecting myself. Breaks are not only important for avoiding injuries, they can also provide opportunities to reflect on the problem at hand.

RULES TO AVOID BEING BROKEN-BOTTOM OLD PERSON: Spend lots of time on health and fitness. Good health means longer, healthier lifespan. Fitness allows for stay away from more sitting in front of computer when not required. Get hobbies. Just makes the first rule easier because you have something else to do. Start this process young. It’s easier to get started when already in good health than when already falling apart. Anyone feel free to add on, this is all I could think of.

@4rontender. Just to clarify, by breaks, I mean like 3-5 minutes every hour or two. Stand up and walk around for a bit :) But yes, you are correct, sometimes this can not be done.

@4rontender... I'm 42 and have been professionally programming for the past 22 years. After reading this thread, I guess I need to count myself very very lucky. So far, no back issues, wrist issues, and my eyes are no worse than they were before I started programming. From a mental stand point, I'm sharper than ever and can still slip into the "zone" where I get lost in effortlessly banging out code with an intense focus for hours on end. Although I wish I was faster, non programmers who see me work think it's a trip watching my fingers rapidly moving without pause and seeing my monitor exploding with new lines of code instantly appearing out of nowhere. The rapid toggling of the windows on my desktop for quick references, jotting notes, flipping to a terminal for git commands, back to the code, switch to the browser, etc, etc, all without ever touching a mouse only adds to the amusing affect it has on spectators. Fortunately, I'm still able to juggle programming in multiple languages across multiple platforms while learning new tech stacks with relatively little effort. I keep waiting for "the decline" that comes with age. I'm truly happy to see @Martin confirm he still outpaces programmers much younger than he. In the end, it's going to be different from person-to-person. Just be sure to enjoy life along the way and keep yourself healthy. And... like @Martin, I am grateful for my loving and beautiful wife and my... wait for it... 5 kids ranging from ages 10 to 16.
