Is it true that you need to avoid the use of Microsoft products if you want to be a good programmer...?

I'm a bit biased towards Linux. But nevertheless, it is a favorite among real software developers.
The problem with Microsoft is their product philosophy. Proprietary software means you can only use it as given. But if you never have the chance to tweak it, how would you learn anything.
Linux is the largest collaborative project in the world. And what more, now even Microsoft itself has embraced it.

Microsoft used to be the "bad boy" when it came to proprietary software and used to have a very monopolistic philosophy. But those days are fortunately long gone - they have over time become much more accommodating and open when it comes to their sw dev products.
Maybe they have made so much money that they can now afford to be nice to developers!
So nowadays there is a free Visual Studio Community version (https://www.visualstudio.com/vs/community/) and they even have a free open-source IDE now (https://code.visualstudio.com/).
